Our experts say
The Carex testacea is an ornamental grass highly valued for its warm colour, ranging from copper, bronze and orange tones, especially vivid in milder weather or with good light. It forms dense, arching clumps, with fine leaves that bring texture and movement to the garden without the need for showy flowers. Its habit is elegant and natural, making it ideal alongside perennials, Mediterranean shrubs or more contemporary designs, and it performs very well both in the ground and in large pots.
It is a tough, easy plant, perfect for adding colour contrast for much of the year. In suitable conditions it keeps a neat, tidy shape, and its “combed” texture helps soften edges, paths and transitions between planting masses.

Benefits
Brings copper/bronze colour and fine texture for much of the year.
Ideal for borders, beds, gentle rock gardens and decorative pots.
Very useful for creating movement and contrast without relying on flowering.
A hardy, easy-care plant with moderate watering.
Pairs especially well with lavenders, gaura, salvias, phormiums and succulents.
Special care
Place in gentle sun or bright partial shade; in very strong sun and extreme heat it can lose vigour if there is not enough watering.
Keep the substrate at moderate moisture: water regularly without waterlogging, especially in pots.
It needs good drainage, but it should not be allowed to dry out completely for many days in a row.
At the end of winter, comb through the clump, removing dry leaves; if it has become very untidy, trim lightly to renew it.
In a pot, use a roomy container and keep an eye on watering in summer to avoid water stress.
It appreciates a light application of compost or balanced fertiliser in spring.
If it loses colour, it usually improves with more light or more consistent watering (without excess).
