Our experts say

The mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus), also known as mastic, is a perennial Mediterranean shrub, very hardy and highly ornamental. It forms a dense mass of small, glossy leaves, with a naturally compact habit that brings structure and greenery throughout the year.

In the garden it works especially well as a base plant: it creates volume, complements other species without stealing the spotlight, and withstands demanding conditions such as strong sun, wind and periods of drought. It can be used both in natural-style compositions and in informal hedges or plant screens, as it responds well to pruning if you want to keep it more compact. Once established, it is an excellent choice for low-maintenance gardens, with very low watering needs and great adaptability to poor or stony soils.

Benefits

  • Evergreen shrub that provides structure and greenery all year round.

  • Ideal for low-maintenance gardens with reduced water use.

  • Highly resistant to drought, sun, wind and salinity.

  • Works very well as a hedge, screening plant or shrub mass.

  • Supports biodiversity: offers shelter to beneficial wildlife.

Special care

  • Prefers well-drained soils; tolerates poor, chalky and stony soils.

  • Low watering once established; during the first year, supplementary watering in summer is advisable.

  • Tolerates wind and marine conditions without problems.

  • Can be pruned to form hedges or maintain a more compact habit.

  • Best pruned at the end of winter or after summer, avoiding hard pruning during periods of extreme heat.

  • In a pot, use a large container and monitor watering (do not let it become waterlogged).

  • Mealybug may appear if the plant is stressed; it is usually prevented with good ventilation and balanced watering.
