Our experts say

The creeping myoporum (Myoporum parvifolium) is a highly effective perennial ground cover, fast-growing and low-growing, ideal for covering soil with a dense, green and tidy finish. Its stems spread to form a compact carpet that helps bring together areas of the garden, soften edges and fill gaps between other plants, rocks or slopes.
It is an excellent choice when looking for low maintenance: once established, it tolerates heat and dry spells well, and keeps looking good for much of the year. In season, it produces small, discreet white flowers that add a delicate touch without breaking the carpet effect. It also adapts well to large pots and planters, where it can gently spill over and create volume.

Benefits

  • Ideal ground cover for covering soil, borders, rockeries and slopes.

  • Reduces the appearance of weeds by forming a dense cover.

  • Very useful in low-maintenance gardens thanks to its hardiness and vigour.

  • Provides a natural, tidy look, with discreet white blooms.

  • A good choice for xeriscaping once established (less watering).

Special care

  • Needs good drainage: it does not tolerate waterlogging or compacted soils for long periods.

  • Moderate watering at the beginning to help it root; after that, low watering (spaced-out watering).

  • It performs best in full sun, although it accepts partial shade (in dense shade it opens up and loses density).

  • Trimming the tips or edges 1–2 times a year helps keep it compact and helps it fill in faster.

  • On slopes, it is advisable to provide support watering during the first summer so it can colonise well.

  • Watch out for snails/slugs on tender shoots if there is a lot of humidity.
