Our experts say

The cycad (Cycas revoluta) is a plant of great ornamental value thanks to its sculptural appearance and exotic presence. Although it is often mistaken for a palm, it is actually a cycad, a very ancient plant group. It forms a short, sturdy trunk from which rosettes of stiff, green, glossy leaves emerge, with a strongly defined symmetry that adds structure throughout the year. Its growth is slow, but precisely for that reason it retains a stable, elegant shape for a long time, making it a standout plant both in a large pot and in the garden.

It is a hardy, low-maintenance species if two key conditions are respected: plenty of light and excellent drainage. It tolerates heat and moderate drought well once established, but it suffers with excess water, especially during colder periods. It is ideal for entrances, patios, contemporary arrangements and gardens with a tropical or Mediterranean feel.

Benefits

  • Adds a sculptural and exotic effect with year-round presence.

  • Slow growth and a stable shape, ideal for gardens with a clean aesthetic.

  • Very resistant to heat and moderate drought once established.

  • Works very well in a large pot as a feature plant.

  • Low maintenance if watering and drainage are kept under control.

  • Highly durable: it can accompany a space for decades in good conditions.

Special care

  • Very high toxicity: all parts are toxic if ingested, especially for dogs and cats; keep out of reach in homes with pets.

  • Essential drainage: does not tolerate waterlogging; use airy substrate and a pot with very good drainage.

  • Low watering: water only when the substrate is dry; in winter, water minimally.

  • High light: gentle sun or direct sun outdoors; indoors, near a very bright window.

  • Remove dry leaves from the base: do not cut green leaves; remove them only when they are completely dry.

  • Protect from intense cold: tolerates cool conditions, but strong or prolonged frosts can damage it.

  • Moderate feeding: in spring and summer, use fertiliser for green plants or palms, without overdoing it.

  • Pests: watch out for mealybugs if the environment is dry or there is poor ventilation.
