Our experts say

The Senecio mandraliscae is a much-valued ground-cover succulent, prized for its grey-blue colour and sculptural effect. It forms dense clumps of elongated, fleshy leaves, capable of covering the ground quickly and creating very elegant contrasts with rich greens, warm blooms or pale stones. It is a hardy, rewarding plant, perfect for dry gardens, rock gardens, borders and pots, where it adds texture and a contemporary look without requiring much care.
In suitable conditions, it can produce small yellow flowers, although its main appeal is its foliage and shape. Thanks to its tolerance of heat and drought, it is an excellent choice for low-water plantings and sun-exposed spaces.

Benefits

  • Highly decorative bluish-grey foliage, ideal for creating contrast and texture.

  • Perfect for gardens with low maintenance and reduced water use.

  • Works as ground cover in rock gardens, borders and pots, quickly covering the ground.

  • Very heat- and drought-tolerant once established.

  • Easy to propagate from cuttings, ideal for filling gaps or creating arrangements.

Special care

  • Needs very free-draining soil; avoid waterlogging, especially in cold or damp periods.

  • Place in full sun to maintain the most intense colour; in partial shade it may turn greener and grow more loosely.

  • Low watering: water only when the growing medium is completely dry.

  • In a pot, use succulent mix or universal potting mix with sand/perlite to ensure drainage.

  • It can be pruned or trimmed to control spread and encourage density; cuttings root easily.

  • Protect from hard frosts; it tolerates mild cold but not prolonged sub-zero temperatures.

  • Watch out for mealybugs in very dry or poorly ventilated environments, especially on potted plants.
