When to plant citrus is a very common question in our Garden, as many of you would like to have fruit all year round. But it's all about planning ahead. We could say that, from April to June, planting citrus in Ibiza is the best option, as it marks the beginning of the growing season and the plants can establish themselves before summer. Below, we provide some general guidelines for planting some of the citrus varieties you can find at Eiviss Garden:
Lemon tree
Light and temperature: they need direct sunlight to grow properly. The ideal temperature for growth ranges between 15 and 30 degrees. It is important to protect them from frost and cold draughts.
Watering: they require regular, appropriate watering to grow healthily, although it is important to avoid waterlogging and make sure the soil drains properly. It is recommended to water the tree once a week in winter and twice a week in summer.
Soil: they prefer nutrient-rich, well-drained soil. It is important to add compost and other organic fertilisers to improve soil fertility. In addition, it is recommended to monitor the soil pH, which should be between 6 and 7, and use specific fertilisers for citrus during the growth and fruiting season.
Orange tree
Light and temperature: they need adequate exposure to sunlight to grow and develop properly. However, temperatures can be extremely high during summer, which can negatively affect tree growth. It is recommended to provide partial shade during the hottest days and protect the trees from frost during winter.
Watering: this is essential for their growth, especially in dry Mediterranean climates. It is important to make sure the trees receive enough water throughout the year, while avoiding overwatering that could damage the roots. It is recommended to water orange trees 1-2 times per week during summer and once every 10 days in winter.
Soil: they need well-drained, fertile soil to grow and develop properly. In Ibiza, the soil can be rocky and low in nutrients, so it is recommended to enrich it with organic fertiliser and other nutrients. It is also important to maintain a layer of mulch around the trees to retain soil moisture and reduce evaporation.
It is important to choose a variety suited to Ibiza’s climate, such as Navel, Navelina, Navelate, Lane Late, Valencia Late, Barberina, Salustiana or Sanguina oranges.
Mandarin
Like orange trees, mandarins need plenty of sunshine and well-drained soil. They should be planted in spring and need regular watering and appropriate fertilisation. It is important to choose a variety suited to Ibiza’s climate, such as the 'Okitsu' variety.

Clementine
Like orange trees and mandarins, clementines need plenty of sun and well-drained soil. They should be planted in spring and need regular watering and proper fertilisation. It is important to choose a variety suited to the climate of Ibiza, such as 'Clemenules' or 'Nules'.
