Our experts say

The Gooseneck Agave (Agave attenuata) is a succulent of great ornamental value, admired for its sculptural form and elegant presence. Unlike other agaves, its leaves are softer and free from aggressive spines, forming a broad rosette of light green that brings volume and texture in a clean, contemporary way. Over time, it can develop a short trunk and, when it flowers, produces a spectacular arched flower spike that recalls a swan’s neck, hence its common name.
It is an ideal plant for dry gardens and sunny spaces, as well as for large pots where it becomes a focal point. Its growth is relatively slow, but very rewarding: with good drainage and controlled watering, it keeps an immaculate appearance for years.

Benefits

  • A sculptural and elegant plant, ideal as a focal point in the garden or a pot.

  • Low-maintenance and highly drought-tolerant.

  • Leaves without sharp spines, making it gentler for paths and walkways.

  • Perfect for Mediterranean and contemporary compositions, and dry gardens.

  • It multiplies easily by offsets and maintains ornamental interest all year round.

Special care

  • Requires very free-draining soil; avoid any waterlogging, especially in winter.

  • Place in full sun or bright semi-shade; in very hot climates it benefits from protection from the strong midday sun to avoid scorching.

  • Low watering: water only when the substrate is completely dry; in winter, water sparingly.

  • In a pot, use cactus/succulent mix or general-purpose compost with sand/gravel/perlite to improve drainage.

  • Protect from frost: it is sensitive to severe cold and can be damaged below 0–2 °C.

  • Remove dry basal leaves to keep the rosette clean and prevent moisture-related problems.

  • It may produce offsets; these can be separated to propagate the plant once they are well developed.
