Our experts say
The Bougainvillea ‘Sanderiana’ is a vigorous and highly ornamental climber, known for its prolonged flowering and its ability to turn walls, pergolas and trellises into a colourful focal point. What we see as “flowers” are in fact bracts (modified leaves) in a deep purple shade that surround small white flowers.
It is a plant with a Mediterranean character, sun- and heat-loving, that thrives especially well when it has a support to climb on and a well-draining substrate. Once established, it tolerates periods of drought well and rewards you with more abundant flowering when it is not overwatered. In a pot, it performs very well if watering is kept in check and it is given a bright, sheltered position.

Benefits
Provides very long-lasting flowering and strong visual impact with minimal maintenance.
Ideal for covering walls, fences, pergolas and trellises, creating shade and privacy.
Highly heat-resistant and adaptable to dry gardens once established.
Works very well in a large pot for terraces and sunny patios.
Helps add vertical interest to the garden and structure spaces with a striking focal feature.
A good choice for Mediterranean gardening and low-water plantings.
Its bracts provide colour without the need for delicate flowering, maintaining the ornamental effect for longer.
Special care
Needs direct sunlight to flower abundantly (the less sun, the less flowering).
Use a very free-draining substrate; avoid waterlogging to prevent rot.
Moderate to low watering: allow part of the substrate to dry out between waterings.
In a pot, it is best not to oversize the container; it blooms better if it is slightly “snug”.
It appreciates pruning after flowering or in late winter to control its shape and encourage flowering shoots.
Protect from frost: intense cold can damage branches and slow its growth.
Watch for mealybugs and aphids on tender shoots (especially in warm, dry climates).
Guide and tie young stems to the support; over time they lignify and become stiffer.
