Our experts say

The Cistus monspeliensis is a perennial Mediterranean shrub, very hardy and especially valued in low-maintenance gardens for its resistance to sun, heat and drought. It forms dense clumps of narrow, aromatic foliage, with a natural, slightly wild look that works very well in rock gardens, slopes and Mediterranean-style plantings. In spring it produces a light, elegant display of white flowers, usually short-lived, which appear abundantly over a concentrated period and bring brightness to the whole composition.
It is an ideal plant for poor, free-draining soils, where many species struggle. In addition, its compact habit and ability to adapt to harsh conditions make it an excellent choice for creating plant mass, a planting backdrop or natural transitions between shrubs and groundcover plants.

Benefits

  • Very hardy shrub, perfect for low-maintenance gardens.

  • Highly tolerant of drought, intense sun and poor soils.

  • Spring white flowering that adds brightness without requiring much care.

  • Aromatic foliage and a natural look, ideal for Mediterranean-style compositions.

  • Very useful for rock gardens, slopes, shrub borders and transitions between areas of the garden.

Special care

  • Needs full sun to grow compactly and flower well.

  • Requires very well-drained soil; avoid damp or waterlogged ground.

  • Low watering: supplemental watering only during the first year; afterwards, very occasional watering during prolonged heatwaves.

  • It does not like excess feeding; it prefers poor soils.

  • Light pruning after flowering to maintain its shape; avoid hard pruning on old wood (it may resprout poorly).

  • In a pot, it only works if drainage is excellent and the container is spacious; it is more suitable in the ground.

  • Monitor winter moisture: excess water is its main enemy.
