Our experts say

The string of pearls plant (usually Curio rowleyanus, a very commonly used synonym Senecio rowleyanus, which is why it sometimes appears as Senecio spp.) is a highly decorative trailing succulent, recognisable for its long stems and rounded leaves shaped like small “beads” that drape down like a necklace. It is a perfect plant for hanging pots, tall shelves or raised planters, where it can show off its cascading habit and add a very clean, contemporary touch.
As well as its looks, it is a low-maintenance plant as long as the most important thing is respected: plenty of light and very infrequent watering. Its leaves store water, so it tolerates drought well, but it will quickly suffer if the substrate is kept damp. In suitable conditions, it can flower with small white blooms with a gentle fragrance.

Benefits

  • Great ornamental value thanks to its trailing habit and unique form.

  • Ideal for hanging pots and very bright indoor spaces.

  • Low-maintenance and highly drought-tolerant.

  • Easy to propagate to create new pots or fill out arrangements.

  • Adds texture and a very clean decorative effect in succulent arrangements.

Special care

  • Needs lots of light; ideally bright light and, if outdoors, gentle sun (avoid strong midday sun in summer if it is not used to it).

  • Use very free-draining substrate (a cactus/succulent mix) and a pot with drainage holes.

  • Low watering: water only when the substrate is completely dry; in winter, water minimally.

  • Avoid wetting the centre of the plant and do not leave water sitting in the saucer.

  • Protect from frost and prolonged cold damp.

  • It propagates easily from cuttings: place a length of stem on the substrate so it roots.

  • If the “little balls” wrinkle, it is usually a lack of water; if they soften or fall off, it is usually too much.
