Our experts say

The Eleagnus ebbingei (eleagno) is an evergreen shrub highly valued for its hardiness, its speed in forming green mass and its ability to work as a dense hedge or living screen. Its leaves are leathery, dark green on the upper side and silver underneath, bringing light and texture. It has a compact, branched habit that is easy to control with pruning, making it a very reliable choice for gardens where year-round structure is desired.
In addition to its ornamental value, it stands out for its tolerance of difficult conditions: wind, salinity, sun, poor soils and periods of moderate drought once established. In autumn it can produce small, discreet but highly fragrant flowers, an interesting detail in sensory gardens.

Benefits

  • Evergreen shrub ideal for dense hedges and privacy screens.

  • Highly resistant to wind, salinity and coastal conditions.

  • Fast-growing and highly effective at covering spaces.

  • Bicoloured foliage (green and silver) that adds contrast and light.

  • Low-maintenance once established and responds excellently to pruning.

  • Subtle autumn flowering with a pleasant fragrance.

Special care

  • Plant in well-drained soil; it adapts to many soil types, but prolonged waterlogging is not suitable.

  • Moderate watering in the first year; after that, low to moderate watering depending on exposure and soil type.

  • Tolerates direct sun and partial shade; as a hedge, it usually performs best in good light to maintain density.

  • Accepts hard pruning: it can be trimmed 1–2 times a year to keep it as a compact hedge.

  • Benefits from an annual application of compost or organic fertiliser in late winter/spring if faster growth is desired.

  • Watch for mealybug in very warm, dry conditions; this can be prevented with good ventilation and control of water stress.
