Our experts say

The sea cineraria (Jacobaea maritima, a common synonym Senecio cineraria) is a plant of great ornamental value for its silver, dense and velvety foliage. It brings light, contrast and structure to the garden all year round, acting as the perfect “neutral” to pair with vivid blooms and darker greens. Its natural shape is compact and rounded, and over time it may stretch slightly if it is not pruned.
It is a particularly rewarding species for low-maintenance gardens: it tolerates sun, wind and salty conditions, and adapts well to poor soils as long as they drain properly. In season it can produce small yellow flowers, but they are often pinched out or trimmed back to keep the focus on the foliage, which is its main attraction.

Benefits

  • Highly decorative silvery foliage that adds contrast and brightness all year round.

  • Ideal for low-maintenance gardens and Mediterranean or contemporary planting schemes.

  • Good tolerance to sun, wind and salinity.

  • Perfect for borders, mixed beds, rock gardens and pots.

  • Works as a “balancing” plant that enhances flowering and vibrant colours.

Special care

  • Place in full sun to preserve the silver colour and compact shape; in partial shade it may turn greener.

  • Needs good drainage; avoid waterlogging and heavy soils.

  • Low to moderate watering: once established, water only when the growing medium is dry.

  • Trim lightly or prune to keep it compact and encourage new, more silvery shoots.

  • If you want to prioritise the foliage, remove the flower spikes as soon as they appear.

  • In a pot, use an airy growing medium and do not leave standing water in the saucer.

  • Watch for excess moisture, which can encourage fungal problems or rot.
