Our experts say

The Limonium (for example, Limonium macrophy…, depending on the variety) is a very hardy, ornamental plant, known for its fine, delicate flower stems that create small clouds of bloom and bring a natural, elegant effect. It usually develops a rosette of leaves and, during the flowering season, produces firm stems with plenty of small flowers in soft or intense shades, depending on the species or cultivar. It is a plant especially valued in low-maintenance gardens for its tolerance to sun, wind and saline environments, and also for performing well in poor soils, provided drainage is good.
In addition to its garden use, many varieties of limonium are known for their value as a cut flower and, above all, as a dried flower, as they retain their shape and colour very well once dried. It works especially well in rock gardens, borders, naturalistic beds and large pots.

Benefits

  • Light, natural flowering that adds texture and movement.

  • Highly resistant to sun, wind and demanding conditions, with little maintenance.

  • Excellent for sustainable, low-water-use gardens.

  • Ideal for cut flowers and especially for dried flowers.

  • Brings vertical structure without making the garden feel rigid and pairs well with grasses and perennials.

Special care

  • Place in full sun for more abundant flowering and sturdier stems.

  • Requires very free-draining soil; avoid waterlogging and heavy growing media.

  • Water lightly to moderately: more regularly at the start; once established, water at wider intervals.

  • Remove dried flower spikes to keep the plant tidy and encourage new growth.

  • It does not need heavy feeding; a light application in spring is enough if you want more flowering.

  • In a pot, use an airy growing medium with sand/perlite and monitor watering in summer.

  • Highly tolerant of wind and salinity, ideal for exposed sites.
