Our experts say

Chocolate mint (Mentha × piperita ‘Chocolate’) is an aromatic herb highly valued for its freshness and the sweet note of its fragrance, which subtly recalls cocoa. It has green leaves with dark tones and stems that may show purple hues, forming a vigorous and very productive plant. It is ideal to keep near the kitchen: it can be used for infusions, desserts, cocktails and recipes where a refreshing touch with a distinctive twist is desired.

Like many mints, it grows vigorously and spreads easily, so it works especially well in a pot, where it is easier to keep under control. It appreciates regular watering and a bright spot, while avoiding the harshest sun in summer. Well cared for, it provides tender leaves for much of the year.

Benefits

  • Intense aroma, ideal for infusions, cooking and cocktails.

  • Fast-growing and highly productive in leaf production.

  • Very easy to maintain in a pot with regular watering.

  • Brings freshness and fragrance to terraces and urban gardens.

  • Can be harvested continuously, encouraging new shoots and greater density.

Special care

  • Preferably grow in a pot to control its spread (it tends to become invasive if planted in the ground).

  • Keep the substrate always slightly moist, without waterlogging; it does not tolerate prolonged drought.

  • Place in bright partial shade or gentle sun; in summer it does better protected from the strong midday sun.

  • Trim the tips frequently so it stays compact and produces new leaves.

  • Remove flowers if you want to prioritise leaves and aroma; flowering can reduce leaf vigour.

  • Apply a light feed during spring and summer if you harvest often, to maintain production.

  • Watch out for aphids and red spider mite in very dry conditions; improve ambient humidity and ventilation.
