Our experts say
Metrosideros excelsa is a species native to New Zealand, renowned for its brilliant red flowering that appears in early summer. Its flowers, similar to those of callistemon, are made up of numerous stamens that create a fluffy, colourful texture.
Its evergreen foliage, with oval, grey-green leaves, is also highly ornamental. It is very resistant to wind and saline conditions, so it adapts perfectly to coastal Mediterranean climates such as that of Ibiza. Its growth can be controlled through pruning, which also makes it suitable for cultivation as a shrub or in large pots.
