Our experts say

The Miscanthus sinensis is an ornamental grass with a large, striking presence, widely used in gardening for its ability to bring height, texture and movement for much of the year. It forms dense clumps of long, arching leaves that create an elegant, natural effect, ideal for giving structure to borders, wide edging or contemporary and naturalistic plantings. In season, it can produce highly decorative feathery plumes, adding lightness and particular interest in autumn and winter, when many other plants lose prominence.
It is a resilient, adaptable plant, especially effective as a backdrop planting or as a statement feature in groups. It performs well both in the ground and in a large pot, and pairs very well with flowering perennials, Mediterranean shrubs and other grasses, adding volume without making the space feel hard.

Benefits

  • Brings height, volume and movement with a natural, elegant effect.

  • Ornamental spikes with seasonal interest, especially in autumn and winter.

  • Ideal as a backdrop planting, a light screen or a feature in large beds.

  • A resilient plant that is easy to maintain, with moderate watering.

  • Combines beautifully with perennials, shrubs and other grasses for contemporary or naturalistic designs.

Special care

  • Place in full sun for more compact growth and more pronounced flowering; tolerates partial shade.

  • Requires well-drained soil, but appreciates a little more moisture than other grasses in summer.

  • Moderate watering: regular in the warmer season, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings; in winter, low watering.

  • At the end of winter, cut back the clump to 10–20 cm to renew it and encourage new shoots.

  • It appreciates an application of compost or balanced fertiliser in spring to boost growth.

  • In a pot, use a large container and monitor watering so it does not dry out excessively in summer.

  • Avoid placing it in areas with prolonged waterlogging.
