Our experts say

The dimorphotheca (Osteospermum) is one of the most rewarding flowering plants for bringing colour for months with minimal maintenance. It forms compact clumps of green leaves and daisy-like blooms, with a wide range of colours depending on the variety (white, yellow, orange, pink, purple). Its flowers open with the light and usually provide a very long flowering season, making it ideal for pots, planters, borders and sunny beds.
It is a hardy plant, especially in temperate climates, that tolerates sun well and adapts to relatively poor soils as long as they drain well. In the garden it can behave as a seasonal plant or as a short-lived perennial depending on the conditions, but in any case it stands out for its ability to fill spaces with colour and a neat appearance.

Benefits

  • Showy daisy-like flowering that lasts through the season.

  • Ideal for pots, planters and sunny borders.

  • A hardy, easy plant with excellent ornamental appeal.

  • Fills spaces quickly and creates a colourful, neat finish.

  • Combines very well with lavenders, grasses and other low-maintenance plants.

Special care

  • Place in full sun for abundant flowering; in partial shade it flowers less.

  • It needs good drainage; avoid waterlogging, especially in cooler periods.

  • Moderate watering: more regular in pots and in the height of summer, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings.

  • Remove spent flowers to prolong flowering and keep the plant compact.

  • If it becomes leggy or opens out, trim lightly to stimulate new shoots and more flowering.

  • Benefits from a light feed for flowering plants during the season, especially in pots.

  • Watch for aphids on tender shoots if it is hot and ventilation is poor.
