Our experts say

The regal pelargonium (Pelargonium grandiflorum) is one of the most ornamental varieties in the Pelargonium genus, valued for its large, showy flowers, with velvety petals and colour contrasts reminiscent of pansies. It forms compact plants, very free-flowering in season, ideal for adding an elegant splash of colour to terraces, balconies and patios.
Unlike the classic zonal geranium, the Pelargonium grandiflorum usually has a more prominent bloom and a more delicate appearance, which makes it particularly suited to pots and sheltered spaces. With good light and balanced watering, it offers abundant flowering for weeks, making it a perfect choice for those seeking visual impact with easy care.

Benefits

  • High-impact flowering, with large blooms and highly decorative colours.

  • Ideal for pots and planters, bringing instant colour throughout the season.

  • Compact habit, easy to integrate on terraces and balconies.

  • Simple maintenance with good results if watering is kept under control.

  • Perfect for creating combinations with other flowering plants in bright spaces.

Special care

  • Place in a very bright outdoor position; it works best with gentle sun or morning sun, and protection from strong midday sun in summer.

  • Keep the substrate slightly moist during flowering, avoiding both waterlogging and prolonged dryness.

  • Good drainage and a pot with holes are essential; remove any excess water from the saucer.

  • Remove faded flowers to prolong flowering and keep the plant tidy.

  • It appreciates feeding with fertiliser for flowering plants every 2–3 weeks during the growing season.

  • Protect from strong wind and cold spells; it does not tolerate frost.

  • Watch for aphids, whitefly and, if humidity is excessive, the risk of fungal problems; improve ventilation and adjust watering.
