Our experts say
The zonal geranium (Pelargonium zonale) is one of the most rewarding flowering outdoor plants: it forms compact, very floriferous clumps, with rounded, fleshy leaves that usually show a darker “zone” in the centre (hence the name). It flowers for months with dense clusters of blooms and, with minimal maintenance, keeps a full, tidy appearance. It works very well in pots, window boxes and sunny borders, and also as a long-season plant on terraces thanks to its hardiness and ability to resprout.

Benefits
Very long-lasting, eye-catching blooms.
Perfect for pots and planters thanks to its compact habit.
Good heat tolerance and can cope with short dry spells once established.
Attracts pollinators (bees and butterflies) when in bloom.
Easy to propagate from cuttings.
Brings instant colour and volume to patios and entrances.
Special care
Loose, very free-draining growing medium; avoid waterlogging.
Remove faded flowers and dry leaves to encourage new flowering.
Pinch out or lightly prune to keep it compact; carry out harder pruning at the end of winter/beginning of spring.
Watch out for common pests: geranium butterfly (stem borer), aphids and whitefly.
Fertilise during the growing and flowering season (little and often works best).
Protect from frost (if in a pot, shelter it or move it to a protected spot).
Avoid wetting the foliage at night when humidity is high to prevent fungal issues.
