Our experts say

The Portulaca oleracea is a very resilient trailing succulent, known for its ability to thrive in hot, full-sun conditions with very little watering. It forms low mats of fleshy stems and small leaves that store water, allowing it to withstand periods of drought without losing vigour. In season, it produces small but very showy flowers in a wide range of colours, which open in the sunlight and create a cheerful, bright effect in pots, rock gardens and borders.

Alongside its ornamental value, it is a very practical plant for low-maintenance gardens and spaces where other plants struggle due to a lack of water or poor soils. It works especially well in sunny window boxes and as ground cover in dry areas, provided drainage is excellent.

Benefits

  • Very heat- and drought-resistant, ideal for low-maintenance gardens.

  • Colourful, long-lasting flowering throughout the season.

  • Perfect as ground cover or for planters and hanging pots.

  • Thrives in poor soils and very sunny spaces.

  • Adds texture and colour without requiring frequent watering.

  • May attract pollinators during flowering.

Special care

  • Full sun: needs many hours of direct light to flower well.

  • Very high drainage: use a light, sandy substrate; avoid waterlogging.

  • Low watering: water only when the substrate is completely dry; in a pot, keep an eye on it during heatwaves without overdoing it.

  • Avoid cold: it is sensitive to low temperatures and does not tolerate frost.

  • Clean-up pruning: remove faded flowers or trim long stems to keep it compact and encourage new growth.

  • Minimal feeding: if fertilising, keep it light and occasional; too much fertiliser reduces flowering.

  • In a pot: choose a container with drainage holes and do not leave water sitting in the saucer.
