Our experts say
The Salvia rosmarinus (Rosemary) is an evergreen aromatic shrub, highly resilient and of great ornamental and functional value. It has a dense, branched habit, with narrow, green and very fragrant leaves that keep their appeal all year round. Its flowering, generally in bluish tones (sometimes paler depending on the variety), appears at different times of the year depending on the climate and adds a very recognisable natural, Mediterranean touch.
It is a plant that stands out for its tolerance to heat, wind and drought once well established. It works especially well in low-maintenance gardens, rock gardens, borders, slopes and large pots, and also as a structural plant in arrangements with lavenders, cistus, santolinas or ornamental grasses. It also responds very well to pruning and can be kept more compact or allowed to grow with a freer, more natural look.

Special care
Very free-draining soil: avoid waterlogging; in heavy soils, improve drainage with grit or plant in a raised bed.
Direct sun: the more sun it gets, the more compact and aromatic it stays.
Low watering once established: initially, water moderately until it is rooted; afterwards, water sparingly.
Light, regular pruning: trim after flowering or when it becomes unruly to encourage denser growth; avoid hard cuts into old leafless wood.
Minimal feeding: it does not need rich soil; too much fertiliser reduces aroma and can weaken the plant.
In a pot: use an airy potting mix with a mineral component and make sure no water remains in the saucer.
Keep an eye on humid conditions: if humidity is high, space out watering and encourage airflow to prevent root problems.
