Our experts say

The Teucrium fruticans is a much-valued evergreen Mediterranean shrub, prized for its silvery-grey foliage and its ability to bring structure, light and a clean look throughout the year. It forms dense, branching clumps, with small leaves that feel soft to the touch, reflect the light and pair especially well with deep greens, white blooms or warm tones. In season, it produces small bluish or lilac flowers, understated yet highly decorative, which appear among the foliage and add a natural touch of colour.
It is an ideal plant for low-maintenance gardens: it tolerates sun, heat, wind and poor soils, provided they drain well. It works very well as a low or medium hedge, in borders, in shrub masses or as a structural feature in contemporary and Mediterranean gardens.

Benefits

  • Silvery grey foliage that brings contrast and brightness all year round.

  • A hardy shrub, perfect for low-maintenance gardens and areas with little watering.

  • Very useful for hedges, borders and shrub masses with a neat appearance.

  • Good tolerance to sun, heat and wind.

  • Understated yet attractive blooms that attract pollinators.

Special care

  • Place in full sun to keep the foliage compact and the silver colour at its most intense.

  • Needs good drainage; avoid waterlogged or very heavy soils.

  • Moderate watering during the first year; afterwards, low and spaced-out watering.

  • Tolerates pruning: light trims help maintain a compact shape; it is best to prune at the end of winter or after flowering.

  • Does not need heavy feeding; a light application of compost in spring is enough if you want more vigour.

  • In a pot, use an airy growing medium and control watering to avoid excess moisture.

  • Watch for scale insects in very hot, dry conditions if the plant is stressed.
