Our experts say
The Vitex (Vitex agnus-castus), also called chaste tree, is a shrub or small tree with a light, highly ornamental appearance, prized for its flower spikes in violet/lilac shades (sometimes white) during the warmer months. Its palmate, aromatic leaves give it a Mediterranean, fresh feel, and its open habit creates dappled shade without looking heavy visually. It is a very hardy plant, suitable for low-maintenance gardens, and works especially well as a specimen plant, in rows or as a backdrop in borders.

Benefits
Abundant, elegant flowering, highly attractive as a focal point.
Strong attraction for pollinators (bees and butterflies).
Excellent tolerance to heat and drought once established.
Adds structure without feeling heavy: ideal for naturalistic or Mediterranean gardens.
Aromatic foliage with ornamental interest even when not in flower.
A good option for informal hedges or small rows.
Special care
Needs good drainage; avoid waterlogged soils.
Supplementary watering in the first year; afterwards it is very drought tolerant.
Prune in late winter to control size and encourage flowering (it flowers on new growth).
In pots, choose a large container and an airy growing medium; water more regularly in summer.
Remove dried spikes if you want a tidier look and to extend flowering.
Very little prone to pests; watch for aphids on tender shoots if they appear.
