Autumn is a key transitional season for lawn care, especially in Mediterranean climates. Although we usually associate lawns with spring and summer, the care we give them in autumn is essential to ensure their health through winter and their recovery in spring. Below, we explain how to care for your lawn in autumn effectively.
1. Adjust watering
In Mediterranean climates, watering is constant during summer, but in autumn temperatures drop and watering should be adjusted. Overwatering in autumn can encourage the appearance of fungi or disease. During this season, reduce the watering frequency gradually to 2 or 3 times a week, depending on weather conditions. If it has rained, you probably won't need any additional watering.
The ideal is to water in the morning to maximise absorption and avoid evaporation. In addition, grass that is dry at night is less at risk of fungal diseases.

2. Aerate the soil
Frequent use of the lawn during summer compacts the soil, preventing water, air and nutrients from reaching the roots properly. Aeration is a key technique in autumn to relieve this compaction. Use an aerator to make small perforations in the soil and allow oxygen and nutrients to reach the roots. This will improve the health of the lawn and help fertilisers be absorbed better.
3. Fertilise the lawn
Autumn is the best time to apply a slow-release fertiliser. In Mediterranean climates like Ibiza, it is advisable to use fertilisers rich in potassium and phosphorus. These elements strengthen the roots and prepare the lawn to withstand the harshness of winter. Avoid fertilisers with a high nitrogen content, as this encourages leaf growth, which is unnecessary at this time of year. Apply the fertiliser on cool, cloudy days to prevent the sun from scorching the leaves.
4. Adjust the mowing height
In autumn, the lawn continues to grow, albeit at a slower pace. It is important to keep mowing it, but adjust the mower height. Raise the height slightly, leaving the lawn at around 5 cm, which will help retain moisture and protect the roots from the cold. Avoid cutting the lawn too short, as it weakens it and makes it more susceptible to disease. Make sure the mower blades are well sharpened to avoid damaging the grass blades.
5. Control weeds
Autumn is a good time to control weeds, as many store nutrients for winter. Applying a selective herbicide can prevent their growth the following spring. It is also important to remove weeds by hand to stop them competing with the lawn for nutrients and water. Also, rake up fallen leaves so they do not cover the lawn and cause fungal problems due to excess moisture.
Summer may have left worn or damaged areas of the lawn. Autumn is the perfect time to overseed these areas. Use grass seed suitable for Mediterranean climates and make sure it has enough time to establish before the cold arrives. Applying a thin layer of compost and topsoil over the overseeded areas helps retain moisture and protects the seeds.
As autumn progresses, it is important to prepare the lawn for the winter months. Although Ibiza has mild winters, the lawn still needs protection. Collect fallen leaves regularly to prevent them from building up and causing smothering problems. With this care, your lawn will be ready to withstand winter and grow strongly in spring.
