Having birds in our garden is truly a blessing. In addition to their soothing song and beautiful appearance, they also help keep our green spaces safe from insects and pests. But there is no need for them to be there when you have just planted your grass seed. Keep birds from eating your lawn seed with us.

Birds eat these seeds, as they are an excellent source of food, and they also like taking dust baths in our garden just after sowing. So, we need to know how to prevent these animals from eating them.

In this guide, we’ll share some measures you can take to keep birds where you want them to be:

1. Protect the grass seed with bird-deterrent netting

Covering the seeds will keep them away from any bird. The seed is already on the firm surface, as you have lightly raked it in. You can use floating seed covers, fine grass netting, mulch or special bird netting to keep them away.

Seed covers, for example, are very light and thin. You can place them directly over the seeds. If you raise the net a couple of centimetres above the ground, you can stop birds from pecking at them.

2. Use a decoy feeder

Seed-eating birds have to make a big effort to get to the seeds on the ground. So, stop birds from eating your lawn seed by luring them to an area where they can easily get food. You can do this by keeping them away from the area where you have just sown the seed, by hanging a prominent bird feeder, although it should be far from the seeded area, as these little creatures are very clever.

3. Use a lawn repair mix with bird repellent

For lightly repairing damaged areas, we can use a fast lawn repair mix with bird repellent, such as BATLLE. It can be an ideal solution for restoring your lawn in a short time and for lasting results, while also protecting it from birds. Its formula restores the most affected areas in 7 days and includes a controlled-release fertiliser that ensures nutrition for more than 100 days from sowing. It uses a rigorous coating process that adds a biostimulant to improve establishment speed and a bird-deterring substance that protects the seed from the damage birds may cause.

Methods to protect lawn seeding

4. Using fake bird of prey decoys

A classic if ever there was one, using fake predators to deter birds is a good option, as it has worked very well for a long time.

5. Cover the seeds with straw

Before adding any kind of cover, it's best to rake your seeds to 4 millimetres below the soil surface. Using a thin layer of straw just above the freshly raked seeds is one of the oldest methods for preventing birds from pecking at them.

Until the seeds begin to germinate, keep the layer over the seeds and then remove it. Once the new shoots start growing, you should get rid of the straw because these shoots need sunlight to grow.
