As spring draws closer, the warmth arrives and the days get longer, it's time to get stuck into the kitchen garden. In this post, we bring you everything you need to do in your garden in March.

There are many jobs to do and flowers and vegetables to sow this month in the Mediterranean. March is a good time for a wide variety of seeds, some of which can be sown directly in the ground and others should be germinated indoors until the days are warmer, but be careful with the birds when sowing the seeds.

Tasks in the garden

  • Soil fertilisation: Fertilising is probably one of the most important jobs to carry out in March. It's time to wake plants from their hibernation with good food, helping them produce new shoots, flowers and fruit and extend their roots further so they can better withstand the harsh summer months. It is especially important to feed fruit trees and roses if you want them to perform at their best in May.

  • Watering: There are different irrigation methods. If we opt for drip systems, it is necessary to install them before sowing or planting our garden. As always, the amount of water will depend on the weather; during the hottest days we can increase the frequency. The important thing is that the soil always remains moist, but never waterlogged; we do not want the roots to rot.

  • Transplanting: It is very important to know when and how to transplant. We always recommend doing it in the late afternoon, so we avoid the plants dehydrating and suffering from excessive heat. We will always wait for fine weather before moving the vegetables outdoors; March is a somewhat unpredictable month and having a greenhouse could help us avoid losing them. During the third week of March, we can begin transplanting the more resistant varieties such as lettuces, onions, leeks and chard, among others.

Essential gardening tasks in March

What can we plant?

It’s time to fill our vegetable patch with produce. Among the plants we can grow, lettuce, basil, spinach, chard, celery, coriander, aubergine, broccoli, mint, courgette, tomato, cucumber and pepper stand out.

A natural way to create repellents for our vegetables and crops, while also attracting pollinating insects, is to plant aromatic herbs, which, in addition to bringing beauty and relaxing scents to our garden, are perfect for culinary and medicinal use.

What can we sow?

Seed trays are containers for sowing seeds, undoubtedly a wonderful way to grow as a family. The range of options at this time of year is very wide, so you are sure to find a seed you did not sow the previous year. All you will need when growing in seed trays is a tray with sowing substrate, watering the seeds often, and a place with plenty of light. That said, keep your seeds covered until they germinate. Seed trays are needed for rocket, broad beans, lettuce, endive, lamb's lettuce, spinach, parsley, garlic, beetroot, peas, coriander, tomato, cauliflower, among others.

It is an exciting month, as we will begin to see our garden bloom, stock our pantry with nutritious, wholesome vegetables, and, most importantly, feel more connected than ever to our Mother Nature. Now you know everything you need to do in your garden in March, it is time to get to work.
