With the arrival of autumn, many plants begin to fade, but there is one that shines brightly at this time of year: the Cyclamen. Elegant, hardy and full of colour, it is one of the most sought-after plants in garden centres during the colder months. Why? Because it brings life to gardens, terraces and balconies when we need it most. Today, we’re sharing how to care for cyclamen in autumn.

A Mediterranean Touch

Cyclamen is native to the Mediterranean basin: you'll find it growing wild from southern Europe to Asia Minor. It is accustomed to climates with mild winters and dry summers, which makes it an excellent choice for many gardens and homes.

Interesting facts about Cyclamen

1. Flowers "upside down"

Its flowers have a very distinctive shape: the petals curve back on themselves, as if turned inside out, creating a highly decorative silhouette. They look like little butterflies floating above the foliage!

2. Blooms in autumn and winter

Unlike most flowering plants, cyclamen puts on its full display of colour in the colder months. That is why it is so valued for dressing entrances, windows, patios and indoor spaces during autumn and winter.

3. Growth from a tuber

Beneath the soil, cyclamen hides a tuber (similar to a potato) that stores the nutrients it needs to withstand the dry season. In summer it goes dormant and seems to die back, but don't discard it! It's only asleep.

4. Toxic to pets

Although it is beautiful, do take care: the tuber and other parts of cyclamen are toxic if ingested. Keep the plant out of reach of curious pets or young children.

5. Spectacular range of colours

There are cyclamen varieties in white, pink, red, fuchsia, purple and even bi-coloured. Some varieties also have ruffled petals or wavy edges, which adds to their ornamental appeal.

Cyclamen Care

Although many consider it delicate, with the right care Cyclamen can bloom throughout the colder months. Here are the essential tips:

Light

• It prefers bright spots but no direct sun.

• Ideal for covered terraces, north-facing balconies or well-lit interiors.

Temperature

• It thrives in cool temperatures: between 10 and 18 °C is ideal.

• Avoid heat sources (radiators, heaters, etc.).

Watering

It doesn't like too much water. Water it when the soil feels dry to the touch, avoiding wetting the centre of the plant.

• The ideal method is bottom watering: place the pot in a tray of water and let it soak up moisture by capillarity for around 10-15 minutes. Then drain any excess.

Humidity

• It appreciates a slightly humid environment, but without misting the leaves or flowers directly.

• You can place a container of water nearby to increase indoor humidity.

Pruning and maintenance

Remove faded flowers and dry leaves by gently pulling from the base to avoid rot.

• In summer, when it goes dormant, reduce watering to a minimum and let the plant rest in a cool, dry place.

Ideal for decorating and gifting

Cyclamen is not only beautiful and resilient, it is also a perfect plant to give as a gift in autumn and winter. Its symbolism is associated with sincere love, protection and rebirth, making it a very special gift.
