1. Use native and pollinator-friendly plants
Insects are the most important group of animals for pollination. We like to say it loud and clear: we love insects for how essential they are to the health of our garden. Attract bees, butterflies or beetles; pollinators are vital to creating and maintaining ecosystems and are crucial for agriculture. Plants such as Lavender, Rosemary, Calendula, Thyme, Rockrose, shrubs or Fennel are excellent for attracting these important insects.

2. Consider turning your lawn into a garden space
Did you know that lawn is not good for the environment? Simply reducing a small patch of lawn and transforming it into a garden has the power to significantly reduce fossil fuel emissions that, otherwise, would be used on the lawn through regular trimming and maintenance. The new garden area can also increase its positive environmental impact if used as a pollinator garden, perennial garden or even a vegetable patch.
3. Swap plants or seeds
Connect with other gardening enthusiasts and take home some new plants! A sustainable and social way to add new plants to your garden is by swapping small plants, cuttings, potting soil, pots or other gardening equipment with people in your local area. Many of these swaps can be found in local Facebook gardening groups, where you can also exchange knowledge and make new friends. Remember that there are laws that prevent plants being taken off or brought into the island, so always act responsibly.
4. Try gravel gardening or xeriscaping
Not great at watering your garden? Don’t worry, with the island’s climate you can create a garden with resilient plants and low water needs! As more and more areas across the country experience inconsistent weather patterns and periods of drought, planting gardens that require little watering is growing in popularity. Gravel gardening offers a way to reduce water, watering and fertiliser use requirements by removing the use of soil. Xeriscaping is the term used to refer to landscaping and gardening that reduces or eliminates the need for irrigation. Gravel gardens and xeriscaping can incorporate a multitude of plants, including a wide variety of succulents, hardy cacti, some ornamental grasses and even yucca.
5. Grow your own fruit
With a little space, you can enjoy fresh fruit straight from your own garden. Growing fruit is no longer reserved for those with a kitchen garden at home. Just a few fruit trees can produce hundreds of fruits, perfect for jams, jellies, biscuits, ice cream or simply to eat. Dwarf fruit trees come in many varieties, including figs, blackberries, apples and pears, and are ideal for growing in small spaces.
6. Fresh flowers
Every year our customers ask us for more and more fresh flowers. These have been, are and will be a rewarding way to immerse yourself in horticulture and experience the pride of growing your own flowers and sharing them with your friends and loved ones.
